Description: Alternative splicing removes the nuclear localisation signal (NLS) of Uracil-DNA glycosylase (UNG), abrogating binding to Importin subunit alpha-1 (KPNA1) and import into the nucleus. In Isoform UNG1 of Uracil-DNA glycosylase (UNG) the NLS present in Isoform UNG2 of Uracil-DNA glycosylase (UNG) is replaced with a mitochondrial localisation signal (MLS), promoting different localisations of the different protein isoforms.
Participants: (1) Uracil-DNA glycosylase (UNG) (2) Importin subunit alpha-1 (KPNA1)
(1) Nuclear and mitochondrial splice forms of human uracil-DNA glycosylase contain a complex nuclear localisation signal and a strong classical mitochondrial localisation signal, respectively.Otterlei et al. Nucleic Acids Res. (1998)
